Maintenance

Periodic Inspections & Maintenance

A blocked, or clogged, oil filter has a major adverse effect on the engine allowing unfiltered oil to circulate through the engine. The oil filter needs to be replaced according to the Owner's Manual in order to protect the engine.

Replacing an Element Oil Filter

  1. Remove the oil filter cover.
  2. Remove the oil filter.
  3. Remove the O-ring on the oil filter cover, and assemble a new O-ring.
  4. Assemble a new oil filter and the oil filter cover.

Replacing a Cartridge Oil Filter

  1. Use the special wrench to remove the oil filter.
  2. Apply a thin layer of engine oil to the oil seal on the new oil filter.
(This is to prevent the packing from becoming twisted and being cut during assembly.)
  3. Use the special wrench and a torque wrench to tighten the oil filter to the specified torque.

Problems and Counter-measures

Engine Seizure

The engine may seize up if there isn't enough oil and the parts themselves are directly touching, or if foreign matter gets into the sliding areas and causes scratches.
If the oil filter gets clogged or is damaged, the inside of the engine will not be properly lubricated. If the parts themselves, such as cylinders and pistons, directly touch when there is no oil, the parts can deform, get damaged, and/or melt, which can cause the engine to break down.
Under some vehicle usage conditions, you may hear a dry, rattling sound from the engine, or an oil leak may occur before the engine seizes up.
Please refer to the Owner's Manual and replace the oil filter to prevent engine seizure.

Oil Leaks

If the oil filter is not correctly assembled, engine oil may leak. Please correctly assemble it by referring to the Owner's Manual or Service Manual. The specified special wrench needs to be used and it needs to be tightened to the specified torque. If you don't have the tools, take it to a Yamaha dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

[ Questions About Oil Filter Performance ]

Q1: Will it be OK if the filter is replaced with a filter that is not a Genuine Yamaha oil filter?

A1: Yamaha Motor cannot guarantee the engine performance if a filter that is not a Genuine Yamaha oil filter is used.
You can trust Yamaha parts because they have undergone repeated tests with Yamaha engines.

[ Questions About Maintenance ]

Q2: Can I wash and re-use the filter?

A2: No. Replace it periodically.

Q3: Can I replace the oil filter myself?

A3: Yes, be sure to refer to the Owner's Manual, and keep in mind that special tools may be needed. If you don't have the tools, take it to a Yamaha dealer.

To protect the engine to the maximum, the filter can be replaced at every oil change. Please see the Owner's Manual for details.

Q5: What happens if the oil filter gets clogged?

A5: Unfiltered engine oil will pumped to all parts of the engine causing excessive wear, loss of performance and costly repairs.
